    Z-Order

    General

If there are several objects occupying the same location in the drawing, they are drawn one upon the other. Only the object on top will be completely visible. The others will be only partly visible.

Each object is assigned to a level.

The order, in which the objects are arranged within a level, is called the “Z-Order”.

There are several levels arranged in a fixed order.

    Layer

These are the ten existing layers arranged in the order of their background to foreground quality:

    Number

    Description

    1

    Background OLE objects

    2

    Background graphical objects

    3

    Pipelines

    4

    Components

    5

    Logical pipelines

    6

    Logical components (number 33, 45, 46)

    7

    Text fields

    8

    Value crosses

    9

    Foreground OLE objects

    10

    Foreground graphical objects

The assignment of pipelines, components, text fields and value crosses to a layer is fixed. However, OLE objects and text fields can be assigned to a foreground or a background layer respectively.

An object will always be overlapped by all objects belonging to a layer with a number greater than its own. Examples:

    • a text field will never be overlapped by a component, whereas

    • a component can overlap a pipeline, except for

    • a logical pipeline, which can overlap a component.

    Z-Order

Within one layer you can change the foreground / background quality of an object by modifying its “Z-Order”.

    First select the object. Thereafter

In the submenu, choose from one of the possible entries

    to change the Z-Order.

The keyboard shortcuts for these submenu entries are listed in brackets.

Modification of the given level hierarchy

Select the command "Extras->Model Options" from the menu bar and choose the "Display" window.

In the choice box “Z-Order Mode“, three modes for the Z-Order can be chosen.

“Objects grouped by type“ – The specified levels remain in place. That means that components or lines can only be shifted forward or back within their level.

“Free buttons and texts, rest grouped by type” – The specified levels remain in place. Only buttons and texts can be arbitrarily shifted between the levels.

“Absolute free“ (even no fore- and background) – All components, lines, buttons, and text fields can arbitrarily be shifted forward or back.
