The only purpose of component 81 is to connect open lines. It’s used as coupling between open lines, because you can not connect them directly (otherwise you have to remove one line and connect the second to the now free ending of the component). You can see the real advantage of this component 81 if you look at macros. Here, all the open lines can be equipped with coupling 81 so that they do not have to be removed and substituted by a new line drawing.

The states before and after the component are identical.

The colour of the symbol of the component 81 indicates the fluid type of the pipe (e.g. red for steam).
